Hamlet Acts 1 and 2 Assignment
__ /10 Knowledge (K), __ /10 Application (A), __ /10 Communication (C), __ /10 Thinking (T), __ /40 Total Marks

You must make references to specific scenes in the play and you must have references to outside sources. You must write originally and not plagiarize from other sources. Aim to write a total of 500 words (about 1.5 pages). Your work will be presented to the class.

  1. In Act 1 scene 2, Hamlet says, “A beast that wants discourse of reason would have mourned longer!” What do you think the speaker means with the quote, based on what you have read in this play? Do you agree with Hamlet’s opinion in this scene? Do you find it difficult to move on from a tragic situation?
  2. In Act 2 scene 2, Hamlet says, “The play’s the thing wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the King.” What do you think the speaker means with this quote, based on what you have read in the play? Do you agree with Hamlet’s actions in this scene? Consider some of the current events news articles on politics: How could this quote relate to society today?

Although the teacher will grade most of the assignment, self-assessment and peer assessment are also important, as seen in the rubric below (the teacher has the final judgement of the quality):
