You must make references to specific scenes in the story and you must have references to outside sources. You must write originally and not plagiarize from other sources. Aim to write a total of 500 words (about 1.5 pages). Your work will be presented to the class.
- On page 131, Ralph says “I ought to give up being chief.” Explain the context of the scene: why does he want to quit being the leader and how do others react to this quote, based on what you have read in the story so far? If you were in this situation as Ralph, would you give up or continue working? Explain a time when you wanted to quit, and relate the theme to current events and society today.
- On page 145, Jack says, “It’s time some people knew they’ve got to keep quiet and leave deciding things to the rest of us.” What do you think Jack means with this quote, based on what you have read in the story so far? Do you think that leadership requires strong people to lead and others to follow? Explain a time when you were a leader, and relate the theme to current events and society today.
